A professional screening is a quick, non-invasive visual examination that takes about 10 to 15 minutes. Dr. Knuckles performs a thorough, systematic check of your entire body framework, looking closely at your scalp, face, torso, limbs, and even between your toes. She utilizes a specialized magnifying tool called a dermatoscope to look deep into the pigment structure of any spot that catches her expert eye.
You should monitor your skin monthly using the clinical ABCDE rule displayed in our diagram guide above. Look out for Asymmetry (one half doesn't match the other), irregular Borders, uneven Color, a Diameter larger than a pencil eraser (6mm), or a mole that is Evolving in size, shape, or color. Any spot that bleeds, itches, or acts as an "ugly duckling" compared to your other moles should be evaluated immediately.
For most children and adults with average risk factors, a professional clinical screening is highly recommended once a year. However, if you have a personal or family history of skin cancer, numerous atypical moles, or a history of frequent sunburns, Dr. Knuckles will design a more frequent, personalized clinical surveillance schedule to ensure your skin is managed safely and cleanly.
If a high-risk or potentially malignant lesion is identified, Dr. Knuckles can safely perform a minor in-office procedure called a skin biopsy. After numbing the area completely, a small tissue sample is taken and sent to a lab for strict microscopic analysis. If the results show abnormal cells, our surgical dermatology team will smoothly coordinate the definitive removal of the growth to achieve a positive health outcome.
